Exterior House Painting

by Mark I Myhre

Painting the outside of your home is a lot different than painting the inside. The major concern for exterior painting is the surface preparation before the painting even begins. Let me give you an example.

A while back, a gentleman called me up to give him a quote for painting the outside of his home. It was a ‘Spanish stucco’ style surface, located off 13th Street just a few blocks south of the Publix on 39th Ave. It was a beautiful property with a stream running behind the back yard.

Anyway, they were having to repaint it almost every single year before they called me. They had no idea why the paint wasn’t holding up. And they’d already gotten a cheap quote from another painter before they contacted me.

But here’s the problem: Each painter was just spraying the house without properly preparing the surfaces beforehand. The homeowner didn’t tell me this; I could easily figure it out on my own. Plus, the previous painters were using the cheapest paint they could find. Again, it was obvious.

I knew if they went with the cheap bid they’d be stuck in the same rut and have to paint again next year. So what would you do?

I did my best to explain all this to the homeowner. And I said I’d do it right for a little more money. Basically, I agreed to do twice as much work, for about 20% more money. Because I can’t stand it when people get ripped off like that. It’s called a ‘blow and go’ paint job because the guy comes in and blows it with a sprayer and gets out quick and pockets a lot of money.

In fact, the next time some painter comes over to give you a price, ask him:

“You’re not going to do a ‘blow and go’ on my house are you?”

It’ll blow his mind that you know that phrase! It’ll make him stand up a little straighter.

Or better yet, just call us. We’ll tell it to you like it is.

Oh, and as for the homeowners? It’s been five years since I painted their house. I talked to him a few months ago, and he said the paint was holding up just fine. Look, we’re not building a rocket here. All we’re doing is what we’re supposed to be doing. We’re bring our expertise and our positive attitude to every job.

Got an exterior house painting job in the Gainesville Florida area?

Call us and tell us what’s on your mind.
